CHALLENGE
The client was being gifted land on a rural private estate as part of their retirement. A traditional modestly proportioned dilapidated cottage was present and required a full refurbishment, repair works and a new build element designed to provide accommodation to meet the clients brief.

SOLUTION
Savills Architecture was approached to develop a proposal which not only met the clients brief but was also sympathetic to the site while maintaining the aesthetics and charm of the traditional cottage and setting. The site was of great historical significance to the client, having worked and lived in the area for over 60 years.  It was important to provide a design which embraced this.
The design involved maintaining the proportions of the original cottage and using it as a focal point, retaining the red coloured roof and creating a site narrative. The new section would provide the main living spaces and provide opportunities to create external spaces which would provide shelter from the changeable harsh highland weather.
Traditional materials were specified to encourage local craftsmen and skills to be used to construct the project and to allow for better maintenance through the lifecycle of the property.

RESULTS
The client has expressed how pleased they are with the service Savills provided after we listened to their needs and provided sound advice on what was possible for the site. A contractor will be appointed shortly with a view to commence on site in 2025.
