If you’ve decided to save some cash and do some DIY in your home, you’ll need all the right tools to get the job done.

RN Williams are builder’s merchants in North Wales, supplying essential building materials and tools for both commercial and home usage.

When it comes to your home, you want to ensure that everything is finished to a professional standard, even if you’re doing it yourself. After all, your home is likely the place you spend most of your free time in.

Most of us have heard ‘Tidy home, Tidy mind’, or at least some variant of the phrase. Half-finished or untidy painting on walls or skirting boards can make a home feel unwelcoming.

If your living room is in need of some TLC, or you simply want a new shade to brighten the house up, make sure you have the essential equipment listed below.

Dust Sheets

You don’t want to ruin your carpet whilst trying to spruce up your home! Dust sheets help to protect your floors and furniture whilst you are painting. Typically made from Polythene, these sheets are inexpensive to buy, and save your floor from those unavoidable paint drips.

Masking Tape

To protect light switches and skirting boards, add a strip of masking tape over the areas that aren’t being painted. Accidental brush strokes on these areas look messy and unprofessional, and will likely irritate you once they’ve been noticed!

Wall Scraper

A wall scraper is a necessary tool for removing old paint and wallpaper effectively. Leaving thin layers of the last paint or wallpaper will make your walls look uneven, so it’s best to persevere with this particularly mundane task.

Paint Rollers

To increase the effectiveness of a paint roller, a top tip is to use a vacuum on it before using. This will remove any lint which may stick to the wall when you start painting.

Try not to press too hard when rolling on paint, as it can cause excessive paint to build up on the edges of the roller.
